In addition to securely authenticating a person or device, digital identities can be used to encrypt sensitive information both at rest and in transit, ensure data has not been tampered with and provides digital signatures for non-repudiation of transactions.

For person identity, the private key can be protected by a second factor such as a PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition, ensuring strong authentication is balanced with convenience, essential for service providers wishing to offer consumers a frictionless experience.
